It’s not just peeing after sex…
If you are like me, the best advice you ever got for avoiding a urinary tract infection (UTI) was to pee after sex…
It saved me from having to deal with all of the awful side effects of frequent UTIs when I was younger including missed days of work, uncomfortable sex, and of course, the pain.
Shockingly, this amazing advice came from my friend, not my mom or my doctor!
Since then I’ve learned that this isn’t the only time you need focus on peeing in order to prevent another dreaded painful UTI. So, today I wanted to share with you some quick and easy tips for preventing UTIs by using the toilet at the right time.
Here’s the lowdown: Urine passes through 4 parts of the body on its way out, (this is called the urinary tract), which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and finally urethra. But pee isn’t the only thing going out of the urethra, there are also things coming in! The bacteria that causes 90-95% of UTIs enters the body via the urethra.
What this means for you: anytime your urethra comes into contact with an external source you should pee ASAP! And a few drops isn’t going to cut it either! You need a steady flow in order to flush out unwanted bacteria which is trying to stick to your bladder walls (this means you need to stay hydrated, which of course you should be doing anyway).
When to pee:
- Before and after sex (any kind that is, including masterbation)
- After a bath, spa/jacuzzi or hot tub
- After exercise or playing a sport
- After swimming of any kind (a pool, lake, river, or the ocean)
- After dancing the night away (or every 2 hours while sweating it out all night)
- After sitting for long periods of time (like for meetings or long haul flights)
- After removing damp or wet clothes (cause you don’t want crotch rot either!)
Peeing more often and at these times will lower the risk of getting another UTI. Allowing the body to pass urine more frequently helps to get bad bacteria out of the body. Just by changing this one habit of when to pee, you will see the frequency of your UTIs reduced, and you’ll be on your way to being UTI-free in no time!
